I was very fortunate to meet an artist named Heather Clarke a few months ago. She is the artist-in-residence at the Woods Hole Research Center and the creator of Climate Barge. Go to the website (www.climatebarge.org) for more information. Climate Barge is a collaboration between Heather and a dance company called Dance the Yard (dancetheyard.org). The performance took place on an old barge upon which Heather had designed and constructed a platform meant to appear to be hanging from the crane sitting on the barge. The juxtaposition between the bright grace of the dancers and the dull metal of the barge and crane inspired reflection on industrialism and its impact on our climate that has led us to a precipice of change, and the beauty and grace of humanity worth preserving. I was lucky that Heather allowed me to hang around as she and the dancers set up and rehearsed the show, and to photograph the performance and the crowd of onlookers from the Woods Hole community. Here is what I captured.
